Chapter Ten

Though most mornings had Vili going down to fix nets before coming back for lunch and magic lessons, the teenage sorcerer stuck to the house for the second day in a row. He sat in on the lesson as Koli worked with Joni and Aki on telekinesis. Koli wanted to start with something light, so each of his apprentices had a small pile of berries before them. Vili’s wobbled, gliding through the air only to drop randomly when he lost concentration to look at his younger brothers or elsewhere. Where Aki proved naturally talented at shapeshifting, Joni easily held the berries aloft, juggling them with his magic in the air.

“This is too hard,” Aki complained, glowering at his berries.

“Just think of it like the air is picking them up,” Joni suggested, guiding his own to dance.

Vili’s dropped a bit. “That’s how you’re doing it?”

Nodding, Joni frowned up at his elder brother. “Why? How are you doing it?”

“I was telling the berries to lift themselves,” Vili said, sighing as his berries dropped back down.

“Remember, druids and sorcerers approach magic differently. It makes sense for a druid to approach this using elements rather than will, but a sorcerer, like a warlock, is going to be more direct,” Koli reminded them, patting Vili encouragingly on the back.

Aki scowled down at his berries. “Then why can’t I do it, but Joni can.”

“Why can you shapeshift more easily than Joni?” Koli retorted. “Certain magic users find certain types of spells easier. It isn’t a bad thing. Many end up just focusing on one area like curse-breaking or healing.”

“I want to be good at everything,” the youngest brother huffed, brow furrowing as he focused as hard as he could on getting his berries to move instead of just rolling about on the picnic blanket.

On the periphery of Koli’s territory, someone approached. While he kept his magic tightly contained and unreadable to the dark-haired warlock still, Myron seemed suddenly more solidly in this realm. His presence triggered the wards, and his intentions were almost too clear. Wanting shot through Koli like an arrow. He could not be sure if it was his own or what the wards picked up from his first love, but the sheer determination and longing which welled up in his chest almost knocked the warlock over.

“Is that…” Vili frowned. His protective nature made him a natural with shielding and wards, so for him to pick up the sudden change in the blond warlock’s presence wasn’t surprising. “Why couldn’t I sense him before?”

“Likely the shield or guise he had up,” Koli explained, standing.

Keeping the berries up, Joni glanced between them. “Myron?”

“Yes, he’ll be at the front door in a short time. It seems he’s dropped the shimmer you saw. Do you want to see him again and see if the feeling you had changed?” Koli asked. When the young boy hesitated, the dark-haired warlock assured, “You don’t need to if it makes you uncomfortable.”

Joni took a deep breath, letting the berries settle down on the blanket.
